News & Advice

The spring gardening season is at last· underway· and here at Bellfield Nursery we have been very busy throughout the winter months· growing thousands of plants ready for this year’s season. March was a challenging month for us to say the least, with the rain and snow! Hopefully, the warmer, sunnier weather is now on its way!

For a splash of colour in the borders and· pots now, why not plant up with Pansies and Violas, which will give continuous flower for many months. It is also a great time to put in herbaceous perennials and shrubs to get them established early for the coming season. If you have a greenhouse or conservatory now is the time to purchase the more tender summer plants for pots, baskets and borders to grow on prior to planting out in May. For the vegetable gardener there are brassicas, lettuce, herbs and other hardier varieties reading for planting now. Tomatoes can be put into a greenhouse, but keep an eye on those night temperatures! Summer vegetables such as runner beans, courgettes and sweet corn, which will be available to buy at the end of the month, should not be planted out until early to mid-May.

So why not pay us a· visit where our friendly and knowledgeable team· will be· on hand to offer· advice.

Happy gardening!
